Special Recycling Event for Residents in Richland, Lexington Counties

(Richland PIO) – Richland County and Lexington County are teaming up to hold a free recycling event for residents in both counties to properly dispose of a variety of items – from household chemicals to furniture.

The event is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at Irmo High School, 6671 St. Andrews Road. 

Residents can drop off electronics, scrap metal and household hazardous waste, and bring paper documents for shredding. In addition to these items, residents are encouraged to bring clothing, furniture and household items to be reused by Goodwill Industries – and thereby keeping them out of landfills. Also, any South Carolina resident or farmer may bring outdated, unusable or unwanted pesticides to be disposed of safely.

Please note the following items and information:

ELECTRONICS/E-WASTE

  • Limit eight items per household
  • No refrigerators will be accepted.
  • Computers and monitors; printers, copiers and scanners; TVs; cell phones; VCR and DVD players; fax machines; stereo equipment; household electronics; gaming systems

Computers and small items will be bundled to count as one item. Computers, monitors, printers and TVs must be recycled and may not be placed in the garbage in accordance with the SC Code of Law.  Residents should keep electronics intact for the purpose of recycling. Electronics are always accepted at Richland and Lexington counties’ C&D landfills.

Household Hazardous Waste

  • Paint (oil and latex); limit 8 gallons
  • Automotive fluids
  • Household batteries fertilizers
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Paint thinners/solvents
  • Propane tanks
  • Pool chemicals
  • Mercury
  • No asbestos, explosives, medical items

Paper Shredding

  • Limit five boxes/bags per household
  • Shredding performed on site

Pesticides

  • Limit 2,500 pounds solid; 300 gallons liquid
  • No fertilizers unless combined with pesticides
  • Accepted from all South Carolina residents and farmers

E-waste, household hazardous waste and paper will be accepted only from households in Richland and Lexington counties. No commercial/business drop-offs will be accepted.
